More Than a Vacation: Why Walt Disney World Will Always Feel Like Home

People often ask me why I love planning Disney vacations. The answer has very little to do with castles, rides, or fireworks.

For me, Walt Disney World has always been about family.

It began with my very first flight as a child. I still remember looking out the airplane window, completely captivated by the endless white clouds below us. Everything felt exciting, new, and full of possibility. Waiting at the end of that flight was Walt Disney World, and although I couldn't have known it then, it would become a place that shaped some of the happiest memories of my life.

Like many families, we built our own traditions. We laughed through every performance of the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue, spent evenings enjoying the Polynesian's Spirit of Aloha Luau, and rode the Haunted Mansion so many times that our favorite game became deciding which Hatbox Ghost was "following" us home that day.

Even something as simple as my first Croque Monsieur became part of that tapestry; to this day, one bite instantly transports me back to those carefree days staying at the Contemporary, watching the monorail glide right through the building.

As I grew older, Disney remained part of our family's story. But eventually, I returned — not as a child, but as a parent.

One of my sons faced significant medical challenges growing up. He struggled with mobility and experienced profound developmental delays, meaning our daily life was filled with doctor appointments, therapies, uncertainty, and small victories that most people might never notice.

When our extended family planned an 11-night Disney vacation, we were simply hoping to make nice memories. What we received was something far greater.

During that trip, surrounded by excitement, music, and joy, my son spoke words that everyone around him could clearly understand for the very first time. By the time we returned home, he had spoken about a dozen clear words. It wasn't magic in the fairytale sense — it was because he was relaxed, encouraged, and in an environment that celebrated every little accomplishment.

When we returned the following year, another breakthrough occurred: shortly after, he began reading.

As a mother, there are moments permanently etched into your heart. One of mine happened while walking around Hollywood Studios, when Chewbacca noticed my son. Instead of simply posing for a photo, Chewbacca wrapped him in an enormous Wookiee hug and quietly walked beside him for several moments, letting him set the pace.

I cried. Not because it was part of a show, but because it wasn't. It was pure kindness, connection, and a Cast Member recognizing a child and making him feel completely seen.

That is the true heart of a Disney vacation. It's found in the people — the Cast Members who comfort an overwhelmed child, cheer for a first roller coaster, or help a family navigate a difficult moment.

Today, living close enough to visit regularly, I still smile every time I hear the music on Main Street. But more than anything, those decades of experiences shape how I serve my clients every single day.

When families ask me where to stay, how to navigate the parks, or which experiences are worth adding to their itinerary, I don't answer from a travel brochure.
