Halloween Horror Nights: How I Went from Terrified to Completely Hooked

Stacey3 min read

If you had asked me a few years ago if I'd ever attend Universal's Halloween Horror Nights, my answer would have been an easy, emphatic... "No."

I've never been a "haunted house" person. I don't enjoy jump scares, I wasn't the kid who loved spooky attractions growing up, and the thought of walking through dark mazes with creatures lurking around every corner didn't exactly sound like my idea of a relaxing evening.

But as a travel planner, I was always curious about why people loved it so much. So, I finally decided it was time to step out of my comfort zone and see what all the excitement was about.

"What Have I Gotten Myself Into?"

Walking through the gates that very first night, I wasn't excited — I was nervous. Really nervous.

The scare zones immediately came to life around us. Performers seemed to appear out of nowhere, interacting with guests, posing for photos one moment and sending people screaming the next. I vividly remember thinking, "What on earth have I gotten myself into?"

Then something completely unexpected happened.

Instead of focusing on being scared, I started noticing the sheer artistry and creativity of it all. Each scare zone felt like stepping onto an active movie set. The costumes, the lighting, the soundtrack, the prosthetics, and the unbelievable attention to detail proved that Universal didn't just decorate the park — they completely transformed it.

From Screaming to Laughing

As the night went on, another shift occurred. I stopped jumping quite so much, and instead, I started laughing.

The scare actors were phenomenal. While some were genuinely spooky, others were delightfully hilarious, and their interactions quickly became my favorite part of the evening.

I realized then that Halloween Horror Nights isn't simply about fear. It's about immersive storytelling. It's live theater on a massive scale, complete with movie-quality special effects, jaw-dropping set design, and talented performers who stay entirely in character to deliver an unforgettable night.

By the time we walked out of the park, I wasn't asking myself if I'd ever come back. I was wondering why I had waited so long to experience it.

Ready for the 35th Anniversary

Fast forward to today, and I'm already planning my trip for Halloween Horror Nights' milestone 35th Anniversary event this fall. That probably surprises me more than anyone.

If you're sitting on the fence thinking, "I don't know if HHN is for me," I completely understand. I felt the exact same way. But if you're willing to take a chance, you might just discover what I did: sometimes the best travel adventures begin with a little uncertainty, and the things we think we'll enjoy the least become the experiences we can't wait to do again.

Thinking About Facing Your Fears at HHN?

Navigating Halloween Horror Nights — from choosing between single-night tickets and Express Passes, to picking the right Universal hotel for early park entry — can make all the difference between feeling overwhelmed and having the time of your life.
